What happens if an oil refinery shuts down?

No gas, no oil, no plastics.

Natural oil is a tarry substance that is useless unless it is refined. An oil refinery uses various catalysts and cooks the raw oil at various temperatures to separate the various products from it. The oil you pour into your car is not the oil that comes out of the ground. Gasoline, diesel and other chemicals made from oil are brought out in different ways by the refinery process.

If you have a million barrels of oil flowing into the US, but only the refining capacity to process hundreds of barrels then you will only get a few hundred gallons of gasoline out of it. The oil companies have been complaining about the damage from Hurricane Katrina that reduced the US oil refinery capacity. However, despite their record profits they haven't tried to increase that capacity. This way there is more demand and so they make more profit.

So if the oil refinery shuts down the raw oil sits in tanks unused and unuseable.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_refiner鈥?/a>

';Raw or unprocessed (';crude';) oil is not useful in the form it comes in out of the ground. Although ';light, sweet'; (low viscosity, low sulfur) oil has been used directly as a burner fuel for steam vessel propulsion, the lighter elements form explosive vapors in the fuel tanks and so it is quite dangerous, especially so in warships. For this and many other uses, the oil needs to be separated into parts and refined before use in fuels and lubricants, and before some of the byproducts could be used in petrochemical processes to form materials such as plastics, detergents, solvents, elastomers, and fibers such as nylon and polyesters. Petroleum fossil fuels are used in ship, automobile and aircraft engines. These different hydrocarbons have different boiling points, which means they can be separated by distillation. Since the lighter liquid elements are in great demand for use in internal combustion engines, a modern refinery will convert heavy hydrocarbons and lighter gaseous elements into these higher value products using complex and energy intensive processes....

Once separated and purified of any contaminants and impurities, the fuel or lubricant can be sold without any further processing. Smaller molecules such as isobutane and propylene or butylenes can be recombined to meet specific octane requirements of fuels by processes such as alkylation or less commonly, dimerization. Octane grade of gasoline can also be improved by catalytic reforming, which strips hydrogen out of hydrocarbons to produce aromatics, which have much higher octane ratings. Intermediate products such as gasoils can even be reprocessed to break a heavy, long-chained oil into a lighter short-chained one, by various forms of cracking such as fluid catalytic cracking, thermal cracking, and hydrocracking. The final step in gasoline production is the blending of fuels with different octane ratings, vapor pressures, and other properties to meet product specifications.

Oil refineries are large scale plants, processing from about a hundred thousand to several hundred thousand barrels of crude oil per day. Because of the high capacity, many of the units are operated continuously (as opposed to processing in batches) at steady state or approximately steady state for long periods of time (months to years). This high capacity also makes process optimization and advanced process control very desirable.';What happens if an oil refinery shuts down?
Depends on how it shuts down. A planned shutdown is done regularly to perform maintenance.

An emergency shutdown is a whole other thing. It will cost millions to clean out piping, pumps. furnaces and the like. Since it may cost the refinery manager his annual bonus, you can be sure that they want to avoid emergency shutdowns.

You need to talk to someone in the industry, not a public forum.

What is you opinion on buiding OIL Refinery in Dominica Island?

Dominica needs it... How else would they store oil for their electricity and home cooking-fuel network???? Barbados has fuel tanks.... The United States has fuel tanks... Britain has fuel tanks.... Trinidad %26amp; Tobago have fuel tanks...

Barbados can't join PetroCaribe because it would mean all of the oil infrastructure in Barbados would likely become the property of Venezuela.... Which likely would mean the privately owned Gas tanks and all.....What is you opinion on buiding OIL Refinery in Dominica Island?
It sounds like a good place to me, far away from my home! What is you opinion on buiding OIL Refinery in Dominica Island?
i am a dominican and proud to be one, dominica is known as the nature isle, so green and clean,it's beauty is unspoilt.By building an oil refinery here all that is going to change,i do not want an oil refinery in my country, there must be other ways in which we can develope Dominica. Our air, land and sea will be polluted and we would not be a tourist destination any more

How tall are the towers at the oil refinery at erith edible oils factory?

The shadow of the tallest tower at Erith Edible Oils, Church Manorway, Erith, Kent appears to be about 200 meters long on Google Earth. Judging by the other shadows, the time of day is morning and the time of year is winter and the other shadows appear to be somewhat longer than the structures making them. So the height of the towers is probably between 130 meters and 170 meters. To get a more exact answer either contact Erith Edible Oils and ask them or reference an aviation map for Kent.

Anyone ever lived by an oil refinery?

So we looked at townhouses only a mile or two from an oil refinery...just wondering if anyone knows of any health concerns with living by one?Anyone ever lived by an oil refinery?
Yes, grew up around them my whole life, and i currently box. Let me tell you, there's a much bigger IMMEDIATE health concern living in some upscale, suburban, well to do neighborhood and speeding through a red light looking down in your lap text messaging. But i see people daily doing just that with no concern at all. So i think you'll be fine.

Ricin in Vegas, gunmen shooting multiple people, two train wrecks in one week in KY, oil refinery explosions?

How many of these are really terroist related? Would the government tell us if they were?Ricin in Vegas, gunmen shooting multiple people, two train wrecks in one week in KY, oil refinery explosions?
You are right that there have been a lot of ';accidents'; lately. And none of it terrorist related.....well, maybe someday we might know that as true or not. And the reason this administration doesn;t want to say that anything is terror related is because its an election year and the Liberal haters (not all liberals, some actually think) would say ';see there goes Bush again, playing on fear';. They still deny that there is a war on terrorism.Ricin in Vegas, gunmen shooting multiple people, two train wrecks in one week in KY, oil refinery explosions?
Trust me, this current administration would have banners 100ft high in public if there was anything ';terrorist-related'; about these incidents.
You live in a chaotic world. Above your head, entire solar systems are smashing each other to bits. Inside your body, massive carnage and death is occurring every second. Over 44,000 people a year are smashed to pieces in car wrecks in America, and millions injured.

You cannot assume connections among incidents in a world that is characterized by chaos, bad luck and statistical probabillity.
And who says the U.S. is winning the war on terror? Questions like these are exactly what terrorism tries to create. FEAR.
It's the 24/7 news cycle. These would have been local news stories but now that we have cable news and the internet everything is blown out of proportion.
the shooting in la was probably gang bangers the ricin is suspicous so are the others which i was unaware of and this government tell us what they want when they want
the govt does not tell if it is terrorist related unless they consider that a further threat is going to eminate from the existing problem. if the problem has been 'managed' they keep the source to themselves often so as to not start mass hysteria.

Could a private entity build an oil refinery and produce more gasoline to ease the strain on the community?

I understand there would have to be a huge amount of capital and certain interests in improving society but could it be done? And it seems that anyone with the funds would already have interests in oil so to make gas cheaper he would inturn be hurting himself. Is there an ethical way to fix the gasoline issue that has a chance of being used? thoughts pleaseCould a private entity build an oil refinery and produce more gasoline to ease the strain on the community?
No, the big oil companies would use their influence in the Gov't permitting system to prevent this from happening. The big oil companies have big money to dole out politicians and gov't officials to enusre they have the monopoly (among themselves). This keeps the market up, and the profits.

Also, the cost would be outrageous for any private entity to undertake.

Bottom line is Big Oil has WAY too much money for anyone to compete. Our (as a culture) best bet is to reduce consumption of gasoline, and therefore the demand. This is the only way to reduce the cost of a gallon of gas.Could a private entity build an oil refinery and produce more gasoline to ease the strain on the community?
I would think if anyone with huge sums of money and influence would have done it by now.
There are probably grants in place to start the process but you are correct in saying that it would take a huge amount of capital-to just strat the planning process alone. Oddly enough I had this same idea in mind yesterday- about additional refineries.

But to answer your question: yes, anything is possible, if you have the time, motivation, and resources to pursue such grandiose pursuits and little opposition. In the mean time we can all do our part in our own small way by being less wasteful with not only fuel but things like water.

If the state %26amp; fed governments could agree upon a plan and how it would be funded that would be a possible avenue but there is a lot of red tape to get through first and secondly, since they already have a vested interest in the higher costs in the form of gas taxes, this sinerio would be slow in coming if it ever did. You would have to solicite investors and have a comprehensive plan in place to start.

If the president would open up our oil reserves even for a short period, (one hour even) that would have a significant effect on supply and demand and subsequent price.

What ever happened to the A-55 water based fuel that was developed and tested a few years ago? Why arn't gas and deisel engines made more effeciently in different ways such as burning off the excess emmissions of unburned fuel? One answer to these questions as well as your own is there are too many and powerful special interests in conflict. Lets say you had accomplished 99% of your plan to build a refinery for the common good-you would now have the daunting task of getting by all of the regulartory agencies to complete the project and such bureacratic assessments and studies would likely take years! So you see there are no easy answers.

I have to laugh at the pompous address to the problems by our officials as related in yesterdays news casts that we may see easing of prices when the refineries complete thier system upgrades that would make the refining process more efficient. So instead of our government representatives to depend on we can depend on actions from the oil compaines and refineries who are reeling in record profits and paying there top executives record bonuses. What a load of garbage.

Unless the people unite and initialte political referendums and make demands upon thier government representitives to take action for profit reforms and appropriate measures, you won't likely see any releif at the pumps.

As for myself, I look forward and pray for the Kingdom to come and rule with justice and righteousness. That is the real answer.
obviously with the planet in the shape that it has fossil fuels are not the answer! What we're doing now in the 21st century is so primitive would you imagine people in the 1950s using steam power and trains? Think for a minute, and that's what we're exactly dealing by burning fossil fuels which by the way -- the hippies were anti-nuclear because of radiation; but by burning gas we have released more radiation than all of the nuclear power plantsin the world!! of course that generation doesn't care, because they killed all the urge brain cells with narcotics which were clearly illegal -- and I wonder why question could it be because after all these years they still haven't grown up whom I wonder I'll have to think hard about that LOL
Many companies have tried over the last 15 years. The regulatory red tape, environmental requirements, and long process have discouraged them all. Not a single refinery has been built in the last 15 years.

  • Can some answer tv reporter comment yesterday that USA has limited heavy crude oil refinery capability

If this is the case, then won't most oil drilled for in USA go to other countries? Can some answer tv reporter comment yesterday that USA has limited heavy crude oil refinery capability
This is true. It's a fallacy that domestic oil would be available for domestic consumption. Like you point out, we simply don't have the refining capacity available to process oil. Domestically drilled oil get sent overseas into the world market to be refined. It is then sold on the world market. Which means that US supplies are used to satisfy world demand, and not to lower prices for US consumers.

What we do know is that the United States has approximately 3 percent of the world oil supply available for drilling domestically. We also know that the US currently consumes approximately 20 percent of the total world supply of oil. So on a raw economic level, the amount of oil that we are be able to produce through drilling would simply would have almost no real effect on economic pressures that are currently causing gas prices to increase to the point that they have.

But when money and politics mix, we're sure to hear about it over and over, as we are right nowCan some answer tv reporter comment yesterday that USA has limited heavy crude oil refinery capability
I think that you have just seen something that all the gullible people haven't noticed yet- All the oil in the world wont make any difference if we do not have the capacity to refine it- that is how the oil companies control the supply of the oil in the US market- They say it is just too expensive to build a new refinery. This comes from an industry that had a combined profit of $40 billion dollars this last quarter. That is also the reason that the Alaskan pipeline oil is exported.
yes I think we have 5 or 7... not sure one of those though. GW has been trying to give some of the military bases that clinton closed to the oil industry free of charge so that they can build more refineries on them.

Unfortunately, the dem congress won't let that fly... they dont want bush to have been able to do something to help our economy.... at our expense. sad isn't it....

to answer your question... I think most would go to our reserves... not export

What is 'your' opinion about the Oil Refinery workers who's Plackards state, ';Put British Workers First';?

And Where In the World are you from ??What is 'your' opinion about the Oil Refinery workers who's Plackards state, ';Put British Workers First';?
Simple really, the answer is British jobs for 'British workers'. Liar Brown said it the other year, yet never stood by his droning bass tones. So, for once, Brits have got to stand up for themselves in a time when jobs are getting very hard to come by.

Up the workers, it's about time we stood up for ourselves. The French and Germans don't stand for it, and the Poles and Italians don't either, so don't play the EU card now. This is Britain, and we owned it the last time I looked anyway. Good luck to the strikers, I hope it puts the message across that we will not stand for any more jobs thefts from foreigners.

I'm an Englishman, white and proud of it.What is 'your' opinion about the Oil Refinery workers who's Plackards state, ';Put British Workers First';?

    British Workers for British Jobs

I have seen on the news recently the protests outside your plant in Immingham Lincolnshire.

I completely support the workers who are demanding an opportunity to be considered for employment at the site.

As the company that awarded this contract can you confirm why you agreed to and continue to support an organisation which is using racist recruitment criteria in refusing British workers the opportunity to apply for jobs?

Furthermore can you confirm what action has been taken to discipline the Italian workers who were photographed 'flipping the bird' on national TV. Is this really the image your company want to portray?

Until you as a company put pressure on your contractors to offer the opportunity to all workers of the EU (including British) to work at your sites I will be boycotting your product and will be urging my friends, family and co workers to do the same.

I look forward to your comments and assurances of fairness.

Do we really want to become like the French and be so insular and egocentric that we become make protectionist policies or do we want free markets and low prices. If British workers are inefficient in this instance, then rather than strike why not work harder and increase efficiency and make Britain great again with efficiency and quality. Yes the British worker helped made Britain a great nation - but it was the cheap labour of the empire that made the difference!
    Two words,

Greedy Unions. Even big business can only be pushed so far, until finally they push back.

Unionised workers need to realize that something is better than nothing, especially in these tough economic times. It's EU law, so the union reps better pull their heads out of their ****, and get with the program.
Having worked in these plants I would ask the Health %26amp; Safety say regarding the fact that language could be a hazard. If Brits went in great numbers then they would be under threat. If we have skilled personnel here then why not use them the end product will be sold in the UK.I have worked overseas and the British Worker is as good as any and they don't just follow orders they go out of their way to do a first class job.
British - Can you imagine the up-roar from Italy if the boot was one the other foot! British Jobs = British Workers.
they should and thank heavens someone has, and im English, British
I think it's about time Britain has ';woken up';!

    I'm from Australia.

Benjamin, England owns the Enlglish part of the world!
I think they have a very valid point.

Spot on if you ask me. I'm from London and I am English.
im from the uk and i agree with them, the state of this country we cant afford to lose contracts
Difficult one, I agrees as I am british and we need to keep our jobs but on the other hand who really owns the world!
I agree with them, they have a point to make and are doing it peacefully....from UK.
So why exactly do you think that the bosses have had enough of their British workforce and got an Italian firm in to do the job? A liking for spaghetti perhaps, or a preference for workers with a sun tan? Or could it be that the over-unionised workshy British have priced themselves out of a job and could do with a couple of years on the dole to learn that work means more than just turning up.

    (and I'm from Catford)

When you see an oil refinery/rig, there always seems to be a tall tower with huge flames coming out of it.?

What is it that they are burning (Im guessing oil) But why? What is the need to be burning it off? Are they not wasting it?When you see an oil refinery/rig, there always seems to be a tall tower with huge flames coming out of it.?
Usually it is gas of some sort. Some gases are bad such as H2S Hydrogen Sulfide. Sometimes the are just testing the pressure of the well and the flow. They burn it as aposed to letting it flow and get all over everything. When you see an oil refinery/rig, there always seems to be a tall tower with huge flames coming out of it.?
Also this relieves the pressure that these gases build up.
There are some light-weight gases such as methane, that are a by-product of oil refining. The energy content is so low that it's not worth trying to save it or use it, so the easiest thing is to just burn it off.
it is most likely natural gas found at or near the oil reserve.

How can hydrogen sulfide cause a explosion at an oil refinery?

Can it cause an explosion at a tank farm

or can cause an explosion during the refining of crude oilHow can hydrogen sulfide cause a explosion at an oil refinery?
    YES

Hydrogen sulfide (or hydrogen sulphide) is the chemical compound with the formula H2S. This colorless, toxic and flammable gas is partially responsible for the foul odor of rotten eggs and flatulence.

Can anyone clarify the Lincoln oil refinery situation?

such as is the U.K. without workers capable of doing the work required, whose decision was it etc.Can anyone clarify the Lincoln oil refinery situation?
The problem is that we dont know because they haven't been given the chance to apply.

The contract has gone to an Italian company who has imported Italian workers to do the job. Isn't Italy one of the G7 nations - it has nothing to do with costs but a Italian company looking after its workforce at the expense of British workers.

I dont have a problem with immigration - as many know, but I do have a problem with this.

The attitude of workers flipping the bird yesterday at striking minors - that guy should be arrested for inciting race hatred.

At the very least the jobs should be opened up so that any one can apply and the free market economics work. If Italian are better and cheaper employ them - but not so that an Italian company can use Britain as a means of not making their staff redundant.

A total boycott of all Total service stations and products and let the company know what you are doing (link below).

I have this morning sent an email to Total please see link below - I urge everyone to do the same and boycott this company.

Basically, the government like to make excuses like 'there arnt enought qualified workers', which just isnt true.

The excuses in excess, made possible to accomadate the recruitment companys to save a ton of money in cheap labour.

This is unfair in the people of Britians eyes, so therfor they are protesting.

There also claiming that Britons wont except the small ammount of pay, which is also false, since their unemployed and looking for work.... any money is better than no money. Yet again, another excuse to justify it all.
We italians we had to built this refinery in another more civilized country. You have to thank us for buy this company in crisis who gave work to many british people.I hope Italian chefs sell this company and rebuilt another company in a country more civilized.Sorry for my english.
i think you will find it is a management decision aimed at profit maximization taken without a thought for their fellow countrymen and the further degradation of social cohesion in the UK.

  • What do you think of the Democrat plan to Nationalize oil refinery?

The Democrats have had control of the Congress for the last two years. They promised us CHANGE. So far their efforts are a big fat ZERO!

They have no energy plan. They only try to twist and blame everything on the current republican administration.

I am tired of our Congress getting fat off people like me. They get free health insurance paid by me and get an automatic pension for life. What do you think of the Democrat plan to Nationalize oil refinery?
I would think that it would be better to nationalize essential institutions, such as gas companies and electricity companies---because that's where we hurt the most----the cost of oil is driven up by supply-demand and investors, so I would say regulate and tighten those speculator's activities to the point where there is a limit on how much oil they can trade per day and then nationalize essential companies like gas and electricity companies because that's what we depend on: heat and air conditioning, and with wages and social security checks not going up at the same rate as those fuel/energy prices(which drive up the cost of everything else)I would think that prices could at least be stabilized if not dropped down somewhat. The limit for oil production per day is 95 million barrels a day and I think that with 77 million barrels per day and rising demand from other countries like China and India we will reach the limit of oil production very soon and with that prices are unlikely to go down. The seller will sell to those who pay the demanded price first--and whatever is left will go to us--if any. What do you think of the Democrat plan to Nationalize oil refinery?
Got proof? As it stands our oil refineries only run at a less than 70% capacity. It is manipulated and controlled by the oil industry to keep gas artificially high in this country so the oil corporations can make huge record making profits off our need and dependence on them. Much like Enron did with California. Gues What? It's working. I'd rather be paying that profit back into my government every time I filled up so our crappy roads can be fixed, our public transportation can be improved and upgraded and so we can solve the problem of our oil dependence in the first place. Actually, come to think of it, what you said would be a great idea. But unfortunately the Dems aren't going to do it ever.
I would rather have the government control the energy industry providing services to all the people. If the government is accountable to the American people it provides services for the collective good, and energy is a collective good, this is the definition of liberal democracy. No clear headed person wants evil greedy corporations controlling energy, it is just that people are brainwashed by the corporate controlled media.
    Oh LORDY! These Barack minions actually think it would be a good idea;

then they get mad and wonder why I try (unsuccessfully I might add) to point out it is simple economics that their messiah, Barack, economically speaking only, believes communism is a great economic system and loathes capitalism

    go figure?

Get a clue Barack supporters, your man DOES believe in communist economic principles. This isn't an insult, he isn't a bad man for it I am sure, it just makes him wrong as this would obviously be a horrible economic plan....either to the posters question or a Barack win.
That's good option, every country in world is doing that. When there can be a national military, schools, roads, why can't oil which is heart beat of nation could be nationalized ? Than people are not going to think about profit and loss , they will be worrying about oil recovery what ever way it is possible.

Do you think that Privatized NASA could have gone moon ?
Regulating gas prices is not the same as nationalizing, especially when the prices may be manipulated by speculators.

There is no such plan. Calling it something does not make it true.
    It brings a new meaning to ';We the People';

added for the people above,it was actually on the news a few minutes ago. I asked a question about nationalizing oil this morning,I wonder if thery stole my idea.
What do you think of the right-wing policy of removing lying from its statis on the list of immorality?

oh you asked this question so that is quit obvious.
One small step for congress; one giant step towards national socialism. I can hardly wait to see how the federal bureaucracy manages this vital industry and how well they do it!! Heil Congress!!
What a horrible thought. Lower prices for Americans while those poor CEO's won't be able to milk the cow any longer. Just a horrible idea.

There is no such plan by the way.
Only in my dreams would such a wonderful thing happen. But I think all utilities (along with power companies, too) should be nationalized.
They would like to nationalize everything, that is what socialism is.
they couldn't run a lemonade stand if those liberals wanted to

    hugs!
    There is no such plan.

What do you think of the republican plan of removing habeas corpus as an essential right?
    Im thinking your hot tonight!!!
It's never a good idea to listen to any Democrat
As usual they have a backward idea of what this nation is..
And what plan is this? A source of any kind? Or is this just something you 'heard' on the right slanted talk radio?
I like how you tell people to get off the computer and watch TV, what difference is that going to make?!
Hang the socialist bas*ards from the closest tree
This is why we have a right to bare arms!
Maxine Watters accidentally spilled the beans in one of the hearings that she wants to nationalize the oil industry.

Essentially she wants to steal the assets of the oil industry.

    That is a stupid idea.

It is our Federal Government itself that has placed huge tracts of land off limits to development and oil drilling.

If the Federal Government had not palced those huge tracts of land off limits we would not have the sever shortages and extreme price increases that we have had.

these restrictions could be removed with an executive order from the President of the United States of America.

I recommend an executive order that removes the restrictions on oil drilling on land owned by the Federal Government.

for those who think that there is not enough competition in the oil industry, I would support a plan for the Federal Government to form a corporation ownrd by the Fedeal Government to drill for oil on Federal land and build refineries for that oil.

the oil, and gasoline and diesel fuel and other petroleum distillates would be sold to the public at cost in competition with the oil companies.

that would be a way to keep the oil companies honest without stealing their assets.

Consumers would have the option to buy gasoline and diesel fuel at government owned filling stations rather than fo to the commercial stations.

that would prevent the oil companies from raising their prices to obscene levels because of the competition from the government filling stations.

This is waht Franklin Delano Roosevelt did in the 1930's when there was orice gouging by the electric utilities.

Franklin Delano Roosevet started a government corporation to produce electricity and sell that electricity at cost i competition with the electric utilities.

The result was that the elctric utilities were forced to reduce their prices to compete with the supply of electricity from the Federal Government.

We could do the same with the Federally owned land. the government can start producing oil and gasoline and sell it in competition with the commercial oil companies.

You will see a dramatic decrease in the price of gasoline and diesel fuel if the government does that.
Government take over of private sector. Sounds like a Chavez supporter.

    Socialist bastard!!!

How old do you have to be to work in an oil refinery?what do you have to do in order work in one?how much pay?

minimum age to legally work in an oil refinery is 18

most refineries by policy don't hire under 21.

the pay depends on the job duties from a janitor to maintenance to welders to engineers and chemist.

anywhere from $28,000.00 to about $93,000.00 a year. How old do you have to be to work in an oil refinery?what do you have to do in order work in one?how much pay?
    18

type of work depends on what you were hired to do

pay depends on the type of work you were hired to do and your experience.

some types of jobs in an oil refinery:

    chemist

    secretary

    mechanic

    engineer

    construction worker

    geologist

    geophysicist

    Human resources cooridinator

    IT support

    accountants

    sales persons

    customer services

    public relations

Of the two options, which type of engineer is most likely to work at an oil/gas refinery?

The two options I'm giving are either chemical or petroleum engineer. From my research it appears petroleum engineers are primarily trained to work in the field, where the products is extracted. It also seems chemical engineers are more likely to be the ones to work at a refinery, separating the products. I guess I am just curious as to whether or not petroleum engineers have a place at refineries and if so what is there role?Of the two options, which type of engineer is most likely to work at an oil/gas refinery?
Petroleum engineers tend to work in the Exploration and Production end of the business whereas chemical engineers can work in either.

In terms of percentage, there are more mechanical and electrical engineers than petroleum or chemical engineers in either end of the business. Of the two options, which type of engineer is most likely to work at an oil/gas refinery?
I would say most likely a Chemical Engineer would be found at the refineries. Most of the Petroleum Engineers I know work in the field and develop the most efficient and cleanest ways to extract the oil. Refining is a chemical process and a Petroleum engineer will learn about the refining process but most likely to be found in the field. Then again if your passion is in the refineries but feel as if you'd prefer the petroleum schooling chances are you'd find a job where you want. The nice part about that is you would understand the whole start to finish process. Hope this helps.
Chemical engineers usually work in the labs in a refinery checking product streams etc., if they work in a refinery at all.

The ones working the refinery are usually Mechanical, Control, and Electrical engineers.
    Chem E.

Is it dangerous or unhealthy to live 1 mile from an oil refinery?

Thinking of buying a house near one, and wonder if it's a bad idea.Is it dangerous or unhealthy to live 1 mile from an oil refinery?
Property values are less near a refinery. If you live near a refinery, check the state Department of Environmental Quality to investigate what kinds of violations they have had. It could be that the groundwater beneath your property may be contaminated, if they have had a release. If you are on a well, this would not be a good thing.

See what kind of air discharges they are permitted for. There will be alot of sulphur in their discharges and it will smell bad.

Otherwise, unless you, your spouse, your children have a genetic predisposition for cancer or other respiratory illnesses, you should not have a problem.

Find out where your evacuation routes are in an emergency should one arise. If they store Chlorine (ask your county emergency planning department), you may be required to leave your home in the event of a toxic release.

If they do store large quantities of toxic materials that may present themselves as a poisonous hazard, I would get a few Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBAs) like the firemen use in the event of an emergency evacuation. Is it dangerous or unhealthy to live 1 mile from an oil refinery?
no. the pro is that you can get all the oil you want ;)
very dangerous due to the explosive power of a refinery and the out put that drifts overhead ..well to say the least cant be good for you .
i would find a house some where else
i don't think you're unsafe if you live there.

it would matter to me what side of the refinery you lived on

(n, s, e, or w). The predominant wind is going to be going in one of those directions carrying the pollutants along.
no its just then a fire starts it might blow...i live by one and thers no problem

Why do the insurgents attack innocent civilians instead of the oil refinery which is our only interest there?

You show your bias and ignorance by saying that the oil refineries are our only interest there. But to answer your question, they do attack oil assets, as well as electrical plants or any other development which strengthens the Iraqi people and government. Why do the insurgents attack innocent civilians instead of the oil refinery which is our only interest there?
My guess is, by attacking public areas with lots of bystanders, they send a message to both fighting troops, the government, and the people that 1. they are willing to sacrifice ';a few'; for their overall goal, and 2. they have no problem punishing anyone that may not be for their cause. You also have to take into account that in areas such as Iraq, there is a centuries old tribal war going on along with the one America is fighting. Everyone thinks they are right and everyone wants power, and attacks in various neighborhoods is just another way to subdue certain groups through fear. Why do the insurgents attack innocent civilians instead of the oil refinery which is our only interest there?
because oil is our only interest there, oil refineries are protected 24/7 by our troops. even a fly couldn't get through. there is no way that the troops will let any iraqi near the refineries
because by killing civilians they dont haev to fight us, who dominate them

blowing up cars is alot easier than fighting a soldier
Because they only want to kill.
Cause they aren't just fighting the US, they are fighting all those who support this war.
because if they do, they will lose the only source of income in their country.
Because they are cowards that hide behind Shields of flesh and blood thinking the innocent ones will protect them long enough to give them retreat and recoup time. all cowards will do that. They send their cowards out to fight in a mans war.

I don't know, but I guess they will need to increase the gas prices now....
    Oh sorry that was me,

Why does it take weeks to bring an oil refinery back ';on line?';?

In the wake of Hurricane Ike, gasoline prices have spiked by as much as $1.50 per gallon in some areas of the country. Why is the oil industry allowed to rape the American people?!?Why does it take weeks to bring an oil refinery back ';on line?';?
Maybe so they can claim a shortage longer to jack up the gas prices..I'm not too sure about it, but I don't think I'm too far off.

What year was the last oil refinery built in the USA?

    1976

Don't fixate on the NUMBER of refineries. If I had ten refineries processing 1 million barrels of crude a year I could process 10 million barrels of crude a year. If I expanded each refinery to triple their output I would be able to process 30 million barrels of crude BUT I still have the same ten refineries. In the United States there are more than 150 refineries. Because of the severe environmental regulations it is much easier and cost effective to expand an existing refinery than to build a new one.

For the first seven months of 2008, U.S. oil demand declined to a five-year low compared with the same period in previous years. It is likely we will have excess capacity in the US in the near future.

The cost of oil is artificial. If there was competition the price would be about $15.00 a barrel. The recent oil price rise is OPECs attempt to find the ';sweet spot'; in oil prices. That is the highest price they can get without triggering a reaction that would lead to lower oil usage. They may have exceeded that number already.

The move to alternative energy has a pathway that can be halted. In any technology there is an initial phase that is inefficient. The older technology will dominate. If the new technology is nurtured it will progress through both increased productivity and economies of scale (learning curve and selling more). If nurtured, there will come a time when the new technology will wipe out the older technology. That is why solar, etc. have government subsidies. That is one way to nurture.

The problem with innovation is the huge artificially high price of oil. If you were an investor would you put your money into a new technology that could produce an electric car that could get a running price of $0.03 per mile? If you have a hybrid that gets 50 miles per gallon and gas is $3.50 per gallon that running cost is $0.07 per mile. WOW, a car that gets the equivalent of 100 MPG. Let鈥檚 put $100,000,000. into development of the car. Next month the price of oil is $50.00 a barrel and nobody wants to buy your car.

That is why investors aren鈥檛 doing as much as they could to develop alternativies.

At what temperature(loss on ignition) do we estimate the organic content of a fouling deposit in oil refinery?

There is some fouling in heat exchangers in oil refinery .I want to know percentage of organic and inorganic in the fouling by igniting the fouling deposit .what is LOI temperature for estimating organic content in the fouling? At what temperature(loss on ignition) do we estimate the organic content of a fouling deposit in oil refinery?
The temperatures used are not consistent and are usually based on experience of what is useful. For example, in my industry, we use a muffle furnace set at 1000C to determine the LOI in coal ash, but the stuff has already been burned once and the inorganics have been oxidized. I have seen methods for soil samples that use 500C, that may be more suited to your process since you have unoxidized inorganics.

Just be careful when you first put the sample in the furnace, you should slowly ignite it first, I imagine you will have a high fraction of long chain hydrocarbons that will gas off and burn.

Do you have an opinion on the Italian/Portuguese workers @ the Lindsey oil refinery in Lincolnshire?

Should UK workers been given 'some' employment there?

Thank you.Do you have an opinion on the Italian/Portuguese workers @ the Lindsey oil refinery in Lincolnshire?
The question about U.K. workers getting employment could be asked all over the world and perhaps should be.Do you have an opinion on the Italian/Portuguese workers @ the Lindsey oil refinery in Lincolnshire?
The question is that you, the UK, are a part of the EU and the workers in question are from countries belonging to the EU.

As you know, any EU citizen can work wherever he wants and has every right to do so.

You wouldn't like to see the english who work and live in Italy and Portugal to be persecuted and blamed, would you?

And if you knew something about economy you should be aware that protectionist measures like the ones you suggest, would worsen the already serious crisis 10 times because every country in the EU depends on foreign labour.

If you don't agree with the situation don't blame the italian and portuguese workers who only want what you want, to make a living and provide for their own.

The only thing you can do is to call for a referendum for the UK to LEAVE the EU.
People who complain about ';British jobs for British workers'; live in LaLa land. In an increasingly globalized world and with and unified European job market nationality of the employee related to the job location is no longer relevant.

Take note that the Italian/Portuguese crew supposed to start working on a project is already employed and trained by the Italian company who won the bidding for the project, which is supposed to be completed in four months. It wouldn't obviously be economically viable for the company to fire them (and pay severance and benefits) and hire and train British workers for the same project just to lay them off four months later.

It must also be taken into consideration the fact that NO workers had been laid off or made redundant at the facility because of the arrival of the Italians and the Portuguese. Quite contrarily, once the new plant will be complete and ready, the company who owns the refinery would likely be in need to hire more locals to manage and operate it.

All this has been put in jeopardy by a bunch of hotheads who play on the stupidity and ignorance of the average British jerk in order to create a problem for the Prime Minister, regardless of the fact that it would seriously undermine the earnings and the job security of many British workers (who joined the illegal strikes) in the process.

Meanwhile, about 100 British technicians and engineers that have been working in another oil refinery in Italy for a few months, so far without any protests or objections from the local Italian workforce, are now finding their jobs more and more in danger, since the Italian government is hinting about sending them back if the Italian workers in Lincolnshire won't be allowed to do their job.

In my view, the attempt by the company who own the refinery to appease the crowds by hinting at the possibility of hiring a limited number of locals to fill some positions is the wrong course of action.

They should have called the riot police to clear the way for the Italians and the Portuguese to do their job, and mercilessly fire all their workers who would refuse to go back to work, replacing them with people from former Commonwealth countries such as Australia, South Africa, Canada, etc., of which am pretty sure there will be plenty to choose among.

An unified and borderless job market benefits everyone, making European industries more competitive in the global economic arena, and providing and even distribution of jobs to people of good will. And once it has been started, there is no rolling back.

British unemployed workers should stop whining and look up in the ';Eures'; website (www.europa.eu.int/eures) who lists nearly one million open positions in the EU, both skilled and unskilled, to get a good paying job elsewhere instead of complaining when they can't get a job within walking distance from their homes.

And to the idiot who will boot out the Italians who make obscene gestures to the picketing strikers, since when it's OK to restrict free speech in the UK? I'm pretty sure the striking mob didn't exactly show peaceful gestures to them.
The firm that owns the refinery should use they're own people as managers/ foremen and hire the locals as the main bulk of the workforce. They must have money to burn because its going to cost them more shipping the workers over and putting them in digs. Ok then they could use on site caravans, but what about security? what about when the workers go off site who's going to protect them?
There are British workers already on the site - they're the ones who have downed the tools but there are plenty of well trained local people who were made redundant recently who could have filled the vacancies. However Total contracted the work out, under european law and the Italian company got the contract and preferred to use their own labour which is cheaper than the Brits. Blame Brown for signing us up to this piece of s**t legislation! What a fumbler! What a crass idiot! British jobs for British workers! You CANNOT say that as EUROPEAN legislation dictates otherwise and Brown knew that!

What about the 2000 Spaniards currently constructing the Olympic stadium in our capital city London??? That is supposed to be the flagship for the Olympics in England - why is that being built by Spaniards? European law obviously! We have thousands of builders, joiners, electricians, roofers, plumbers, decorators etc out of work and yet we have these people working?? I wonder if they're paying tax and insurance into our system or like the workers at Immingham that too is being paid in Italy! Beggars belief doesn't it?
I saw one giving an obscene gesture to British workers and I would boot him out of the country for that alone.

The problem is that British companies in the EU use British management but local workers. This is Brits playing '; fair'; again. We are mugs for expecting Don Corleone's legit side to play fair
they should have given it to our own you want to come and live here its like being in another country, and they make a mess of the place also they send their money out of this country where our people would spend it here
UK workers should have been given all of the jobs, boot Brown out his useless!
    given their own

I live near an oil refinery and the smell is unbearable! Is it dangerous?

There's an oil refinery in my neighbourhood, and sometimes I can sense the smell coming from it. On a warm day (and days are starting to get really warm where I live) the smell is even worse. Can anyone tell me what that smell could be if it's coming from an oil refinery. How dangerous is it?

(I know people are gonna think - why doesn't she move away - but I can't, I'm a student and a live in a dorm (the ony one in this town)I live near an oil refinery and the smell is unbearable! Is it dangerous?
I'm orig. from S.E. Texas, where there are a lot of refineries.

There is no telling what smell it is, as there are many from a refinery. You might want to check with the local office of the E.P.A. as far as if any of it is dangerous. The only thing that I know of, is if you get what appears to be colds or sinus problems, have your doctor test to see if you are allergic to hydrocarbons that the refineries disperse into the air. My dad worked for the old Gulf Oil refinery and we took him to work almost every day, except when he had his own work car.

They didn't find out until I was 16, that I was highly allergic to the hydrocarbons! Dad was able to get early retirement and we moved. You can also check with a Chemistry professor on campus and see what they may know.I live near an oil refinery and the smell is unbearable! Is it dangerous?
Thank you for choosing my answer. Report Abuse

The common odors you might smell from the Refinery will

not have serious impact to the average person鈥檚 health if

released in small amounts. The Refinery abides by the

most stringent regulations in the nation with regard to air

pollution and air quality.Refinery emissions are carefully

monitored, controlled and reported to the local air quality

    agency.

The smell is the sulfur from the refining method. I was given this as a handout and the refinery near me passes inspections all the time. I don't care it still stinks!!
There are many dangerous chemicals at those plants. Stuff gets vented into the air all the time. Check with your insurance company to see if the area is a high cancer risk.

Just to be on the safe side I would move(Preferably upwind)
In my area of CA, I would have the environmental safety people out TO your dorm, to see just how harmful that IS for you. In CA, the places that cause odors are only allowed to let a certain amount of 'whatever' be in the air. I used to live by a winery, that was just horrid smelling. The new homes in that area were just pummeled with the smell on hot days, as you mention you are having. Since it was So. CA, our hot days went on for months and months. We turned in the winery to be checked for emissions. The winery had to clean up their act. Check out your environmental emissions control dept, and let them know your problem. ASK about health problems, when you do. They may be not doing all they can do to keep their oil smells down, and their health risk items out of the air!

What is a barometric condenser in an edible oil refinery plant for?

When you have condensable gases in the product and you don't want to waste them in a process where you have to maintain negative pressures (for example distillation), you should condense the gases and recollect them.

There are two options for this. First one is the barometric condenser and the second one is condenser(either tube and shell or surface etc.) with a vacuum pump.

Where you have sufficient height of the building, the process connection from the vessel to the vacuum pump is connected with a condnser whose height should minimum be equal to the liquid column height at perfect vacuum. The bottom of the condenser is immersed in a liquid bath. As the vacuum holds the liquid column, the extra fluid flows into the liquid bath and then is collected as overflow.

Barometric condensers are generally used with steam jet ejectors with a barometric leg of above 10 meters. What is a barometric condenser in an edible oil refinery plant for?

India will have the largest oil refinery in the world. What does that mean for future oil prices?

Very little. Oil refineries don't produce oil, they consume it and produce fuels (gasoline/diesel/kerosene/%26amp;c). If there was an oil glut and there wasn't enough refinery capacity to make fuels out of it, it would lower the prices of fuels by increasing supply without affecting the price of oil, but right now the bottleneck is oil production, not refining.India will have the largest oil refinery in the world. • Why doesnt the United States build their own oil refinery ?

If they build there own they wouldnt need oil from other countries. Why doesnt the United States build their own oil refinery ?
We have our own oil refinerys. The problem with a lot of them is that they were built in the 1970s and need to be upgraded big time or new ones need to built. The problem there lies within the fact that no one wants an oil refinery in their back yard. And to be honest, we get most of our oil from Canada. Why doesnt the United States build their own oil refinery ?
There are oil refineries in the US but there is not enough crude oil here that is why we need to import it from elsewhere.
We do but the liberals won't let us run them.
we have several oil refineries. It's crude oil that we are short on.
    we have
ask the democrats favorite sons the environmental groups...it now takes more than 10 years for the paperwork process to be completed before a refinery can be built..and then the rules change while the refineries are being built...look into the one trying to be built in arizona..started in 1996
There are plenty od oil refineries that are not being used. There is one at Port Manatee in Bradenton FL. It was never put into operation. Sunray DX has one closed in Duncan , OK.

There is plenty of crude for more refineries. Gas prices would go down if supply was increased..What part of profit don't you understand?
So now refineries make crude oil out of thin air??

    US exports refined products.
I think the U.S does have its own refineries, they are along the gulf coast. And I think we use other countries oil because the oil that is pump in Alaska is put in the US Oil Reserves, but im not really sure.
We have really big oil Refineries in the U.S.

We buy Crude oil from other countries and refine it here.

How long does it take to build an oil refinery and while you are at it, how long to build a pipeline in ANWAR?

Oil refineries are a bit like light rays into space ,,they just go on forever,,,profound HUH! Well to be truthful they can take several(2-3) years before the first drop of anything comes out..most refineries we have in America today are very old and use Analog controls. To update a system to digital can take longer than building a new refinery..The other problem is where the thing CAN be built ...Nobody wants a refinery in their backyard...but somebody has to. So location is a big problem..The other bigggggg problem is the EPA and overcoming the red tape of their lot...In the refining of oil you get all sorts of things perking out that ,well, to be honest are a little less than good for you..like Arsenic and Hydrogen Sulfide and Sesium...other heavy metals are free as well...So being compliant with the clean guys is a must...Everyone I know wants a new refinery so their gas will go down in price..Including ME...I wish we could build a few here in Texas ..in the hayday of the oil boom Houston to Texas city was full of small Cracking plants ..Gasoline was made in batch style from Naptha and tetra-ethy-lead...and re-refined oil...those days are gone .Nowadays Gasoline is a blend of cleaners and de-oxidizers and anti-polutants .. the Octane rating is most often below 90 and a few years ago you could get 105 octane (high gravity) for less than 50cents...the cost to produce a gallon is a direct reflection on our use requirement. When my grandfather worked the fields in Pre-Boomtown days oil was a problem not a gold mine.. Then when boomtown came in the 30's oil was still a problem ...We made gasoline for the war effort and for our efforts oil was still a problem...Our economy flourished over the last 60 years and I'll be if oil is still not a problem...Big oil companies know YOU need it and they have it and YOU don't.... thats what drives the cost up...Our own demand...Well the pipeline question is pretty straight forward ..the US has already built the Alaskan pipeline and it made its debut in the late 70's.We built about thre-fouths of a mile per day...of mostly hand welded 48'; good old American steel spiral weld pipe....Well there ya go ..have a good one from the E..How long does it take to build an oil refinery and while you are at it, how long to build a pipeline in ANWAR?
';The Denali Project by BP/Conoco will spend $600 million over 36 months and have 150 staff working by the end of this year. 1. Near my house: They can be noisy and smelly. There is constant truck and train traffic going in and out of them. They may be very brighly lit at night.

    2. Away from transportation systems: A refinery needs pipelines, ship, train and/or truck transportation to receive crude oil and deliver refined oil products. You must consider transportation costs when building a refinery. What supposed place would be a bad spot to build an oil refinery?
    Al Gore's back yard.
My back yard. But I would not mind the paycheck I would get for renting out the space.
In the Gulf of Mexico, in a low-lying area, near the confluence of the Mississippi River. This area would be prone to damage by high winds and wind-driven flood surges. This is exactly what happened when Hurricane Katrina hit the oil refineries near New Orleans.

How long will major components of an oil refinery last before they need to be changed?

In most refineries, the life expectancy of most major equipment is at least 20 years if not longer. I have known of pressure vessel, heat exchangers, pumps and compressors that were over 30 years old and some over 40.

Some items may require major renovations from time to time and things in a very corrosive environment may not last as long as 20 years. A cooling tower might be an example of an item with a limited life.

Technology change can also make certain processes obsolete requiring a change of equipment. How long will major components of an oil refinery last before they need to be changed?
Varies with the component and service, but generally a company would expect their investment to last a minimum of ten years. How long will major components of an oil refinery last before they need to be changed?
way too many variables to predict accurately...
Year and years, you just have to be sure not to overheat, over pressure ect. Occasionally catalyst needs to be changed out and routine maintenance. We have equiptment still running from 1937.

In the past year I've met several people who work at either local refineries or offshore rigs, and have on several occasions mentioned that I look into obtaining a process tech cert. and degree to become a plant operator. I've actually become quite serious about this and would appreciate any advice/info in this area. When there's a fuel supply problem, here's what I do. Nothing. I don't drive my car and I certainly would not ever wait in a long queue outside a garage. I keep one gallon of petrol in a metal tank in my garage at home. If needs must, I'll use that, but only in a dire emergency.

My nearest supermarket is about 1.5 miles - walking distance. No problemo. . . . .

Stay cool and sit it out.

they'll use anything to charge more for fuel, we have to pay higher prices everyday while the oil companies make more and more profits, they should have their profits capped and if they exceed it we get a discount.

Since a limited number of refineries produce all the fuel consumed... supply will drop and the price will rise.

    Supply and demand.

Don't blame the refineries or the oil companies... blame your politicians who block their efforts to build more refineries and drill more wells.
Garages will use it as an excuse to increase prices again

I'm an op tech in an oil refinery, near Chicago. When we eat out, our contract allows a free meal on 16 hour shifts(paid by the company, of course). On our own, we will call any place in the area that delivers and they deliver the food out to the nearest security gate, and we meet them to go pay. I personally have no set lunch break, sometimes we have time, sometimes we don't. If needed we will just have to put the food in the fridge untill we have time to heat it up and eat it.

How is bitumen cracked in an oil refinery?

please could you describe how bitumen is cracked in an oil refinery (on a large scale)How is bitumen cracked in an oil refinery?
There are several ways of cracking long chained hydrocarbons, Cat cracking using catalyst and relatively low temp and pressure.

hydrogen cracking heat and high pressure in presence of hydrogem

Pyrollysis using higher temp and pressures.

    steam reforming

All of them have advantages depending on relative proportion of feedstock and downstrean products required.

    Quote

While a wide range of technologies are used to upgrade bitumen, in

general the process consists of cracking bitumen under heat and

pressure in the presence of catalysts to break up the long chain

molecules into much smaller molecules. Excess carbon is then either

extracted from the bitumen or is combined with added hydrogen in order to produce lighter hydrocarbons.

Upgrading typically produces very light hydro-carbons known as ';off-

gases';. Off gasses can be used as fuel in an upgrader, or if there is

sufficient quantity and economic value, some off gases can be

processed and marketed separately as fuel or feedstock for petrochemical plants.

How do explosions in an oil refinery happen?

what can be the possible causes in an explosion of a refinery? How do explosions in an oil refinery happen?
Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons, which are separated into fractions at the refinery. A leak in the system could release some of the lighter fractions which are extremely flammable. If enough of it were released and a spark occurred, you would have an explosion. How do explosions in an oil refinery happen?
This might be better answered in the engineering section since once it pumped, geologists are done with it.

You might want to check here. There are many things that can explode in a refinery since combustible liquids and gases are part of the process. They are usually operating at high temperatures and pressures.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_refiner鈥?/a>
Enough fumes and oil in a contained area can cause an explosion if there is a spark or flame.

The temperatures in a fractionating tower at an oil refinery are important, but so are the pressures. Where mi?

And the answer is greater at the bottom of the fractionation tower but I need an explantion. The temperatures in a fractionating tower at an oil refinery are important, but so are the pressures. Where mi?
In a simple fractionator you are separating two components. One is has a higher boiling point than the other. For this reason the lower boiling point component evaporates first and moves toward the top of the tower where it is condensed. The high boiling point component remains at the bottom of the column.

If you want more detail about reflux, reboilers, etc. Look at the site below. The temperatures in a fractionating tower at an oil refinery are important, but so are the pressures. Where mi?
During operation of the fractionating column, the vapors a flowing from the bottom of the column to the top of the column, with the column trays helping to give theoretical stages of separation by allowing vapor / liquid contact. The fact that there is a flow means that there needs to be a force behind that flow. The force is pressure. Most distillation column designs in industry include differential pressure gauges to indicate the boil-up or total vapor flow in the column.

The pressure is higher at the bottom of the column.

There is a lot of talk about environmentalists not wanting new refineries, yet has any oil company EVER been denied building one?

Please include a link or cite a reference. Otherwise your claim will be dismissed as BS.Can anyone cite a reference where an oil company was denied an application to build a new oil refinery?
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 6 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights today released internal Shell documents showing the oil refiner is set to close and demolish its Bakersfield refinery despite the fact the site had the biggest refinery margins, or profits per gallon, of any Shell refinery in the nation as of yesterday.

Shell had claimed it was not economically viable to keep the refinery open and has refused to put it up for sale. Bakersfield supplies 2 percent of the state's gasoline and only 13 refineries feed California's tight gasoline supply (down from 37 in 1983).

    An April 5th internal Shell document released today by FTCR shows that Bakersfield's refining margin at $23.01 per barrel, or about 55 cents profit per gallon, topped all of Shell's refineries in the nation. That means, for example, that margins are 36 cents per gallon higher in Bakersfield than in Port Arthur, Texas. The internal document comments under the category of refinery margins ';Wow.';

    ';Only an oil company that wants to short the market and artificially drive up the price of gasoline would demolish a highly profitable refinery rather than sell it,'; said Jamie Court, president of FTCR and author of the book Corporateering (Tarcher/Putnam). '; Shell has deceived the public about Bakersfield and must be forced to keep this refinery open or sell it to a competitor. This evidence should also spur a national moratorium on all further domestic refinery closures.';

In a letter sent today, FTCR called upon California Attorney General Bill Lockyer to file suit under the state's Unfair Business Competition Law to force Shell either to sell the refinery or to keep it running. The consumer group said it could seek such legal relief itself should the Attorney General not act. The letter can be read at http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/utilitie鈥?/a> and the Shell documents can be viewed at http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/utilitie鈥?/a>

FTCR also wrote President Bush and US Senator John Kerry to ask both candidates to support a national moratorium on refinery closures throughout the United States, stating that the recent run up at the pump ';has little to do with OPEC but is a result of the deliberate restriction of supply by the highly consolidated domestic refining industry.'; The letter can be viewed at http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/utilitie鈥?/a>

    Among the documents released today by the consumer group is an end-of-2003 memo from Shell manager Jeff Krafve to fellow refinery employees that describes Bakersfield's refining operation this way: ';(W)e turned in excellent operational performance this year. We are the most reliable US Shell refinery in 2003, and achieved world-class performance two years in row now. We have made quantum step improvements in our environmental compliance, finishing well under target again for the second straight year. We have reduced the expense we control 15-plus percent year over year, and have been one of the few Shell U.S. refineries to turn a profit... We've done this with the lowest personnel index in Shell refining in the country, making us comparatively the most productive and effective workforce in the system.';

FTCR's letters to Lockyer, Bush, and Kerry also reveal, ';Refinery workers in Bakersfield told FTCR that Aamir Farid, General Manager of Shell's refinery, stated to hundreds of employees at an employee meeting that the company would never sell the refinery because it did not want the competition. This suggests the real motivation for the company to close the refinery is to insure its production does not stay on line and to further decrease competition for the company's remaining two refineries in California.';Can anyone cite a reference where an oil company was denied an application to build a new oil refinery?
You have a good point! I always thought ';the poor oil refineries are TRYING to bring fuel to the public but the mean old Green Peace people and the environmentalists are blocking them at every turn.'; Your point rings true and it appears the oil companies have pulled off ANOTHER BS trick to muddy their tracks. When gas was $1.50 we had LOTS of refinery fires but now that gas is almost $5 I haven't heard of ONE! Interesting!

It seemed as if the govt was FORCING Exxon and the others to simply MAKE MONEY but NOT spend any. It almost made sense when you look at our ';govt logic';. But you make a good point. I also like the response of the answerer that replied about Bakersfield. IT's ALL beginning to make sense now.

When Petrobras in South America gets their new equipment in 2010 and they begin to supply ALL the fuel this planet needs it will be interesting to see what happens with all the GLUT oil that remains from USA, SAudi Arabia, England, and China. Will they just stop pumping in order to keep prices inflated or will they lower the price to 99c / gallon? Every large price spike in the past has been met with extremely low prices afterward. It will be interesting to see what happens this time. It will also be interesting to see if McCain decides to FORCE the oil companies to remain competitive thus lowering the price of gas at the pump! Or will he turn his back on us like Bush?

    :-)

Peace ... Food for Thought Indeed!
I can't answer your question directly, but it seems that South Dakota will be building a new refinery soon!

    http://gas2.org/2008/06/04/new-south-dak鈥?/a>

Kudos to them for using intelligence!

From what I have seen, the lack of refineries are directly related to the OIL companies not wanting them because it decreases profits from gas...so they have closed them down. There are internal memos that back this up.
