Some crude oils contain H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) which is a dangerous and smelly gas. If a refinery is using using crude with H2S in it the point where the H2S is separated from the crude is likely to be the worst smelling (and dangerous) place in the refinery.Where is the smelliest section or area in an oil refinery?
You seem to have mistaken an oil refinery for an abattoir. There are no ';putrid,'; odors in a refinery.
Probably the strongest smell comes from separating sulfur from crude.
